What keeps you going in your current career? The COVID-19 pandemic has caused many of us to switch careers. Some have decided to pivot into booming industries like healthcare and tech, while others are looking at starting their own business. Amidst the uncertainty, one thing’s certain. Work is no longer the centre of our universe and more of us are prioritising our mental health, aspirations and values. Yet making a career switch is not a decision to be taken lightly! Here are some considerations you should think about before making the switch!
Reason For Switch
At some point in time, I’m sure all of us have considered switching careers. Be it looking for a change of scenery or feeling dissatisfied with the low salary and slow progression, write it down! It will give you a clearer idea on the reason for a switch and guide you what to look out for in your next job. Identifying the push and pull factors can prevent you from potentially jumping into a career with the same issues as your current one.
How much are you willing to sacrifice for your career switch? Are you willing to give up your high paying job to start from scratch? Do you have the means to invest in yourself and further your education? A career switch does not always mean switching to a higher paying job in the same industry. It could mean starting from scratch and going into an entirely new industry where you have no experience in! This can put you in a tight spot especially if you are paying the bills or supporting your family. Consider what you value and whether it’s worth it to take a pay cut in the long run. If you already have plans to pivot into a new industry, save up!
There are definitely barriers to entry in every industry, the skills you have and what you want to do might not always be a match. But don’t feel inadequate just because you are lacking in skills! People spend years furthering their studies to gain the relevant skills and knowledge for the industry they are in. Think about the transferable skills you possess and make them even better! Sign up for courses or go back to school to hone the skills that you are lacking. What’s more important is that you amplify your strengths and work on your weaknesses.
Understanding Of Industry
The grass is always greener on the other side and we tend to fantasize about the what-ifs. Before you make the switch, know what you are getting yourself into! Find out the good, the bad and the ugly of the industry that you are looking to pivot to. Research on the industry and connect with actual people in the industry to learn about the job, career progression and trajectory. The last thing you want is to jump into a sunset industry. Or worse, to find out that your dream industry is not what you had expected!
Alignment Of Goals
Envision yourself 10 years from now. What are you doing? Are you making an impact? Do you feel satisfied with your life? A career switch goes beyond fulfilling your sense of purpose. It should be aligned with your values and bring you a step closer to your life goals. If your current career can’t give you the life that you envision in 10 years, make that switch!
Now that you have a clearer idea, it’s time to put those thoughts into action! With these 5 considerations in mind, create an action plan that will enable you to transition smoothly into a new career. It might be daunting to dip your toes into something new, but go for it! You’ll never know if you never try.
