As the year comes to an end, it’s time for us to reflect on what we have done over the past year. Most of us don’t have the luxury of time to consistently do self reflection. However, growth and self-reflection comes hand in hand. In order to grow, we need to know what worked or did not work for us. This gives us a better direction for goal setting and planning short term goals. And no, self-reflection does not always have to be work-related. So use this time to sit down and reflect on your life goals and progress. If you’re looking to improve yourself and achieve greater heights, start asking the right questions!
Am I Using My Time Wisely?
Time is precious, but using your time wisely goes beyond just being productive. It also means prioritising time for things that matter. Be it finding pockets of time to relax and enjoy your hobbies. Or spending time with your loved ones, do it. Imagine yourself 5 to 10 years down the road. Look back and ask yourself these questions: “Am I happy living my life now?” “Are there any parts of my life that I would like to change?”
What’s Important To Me?
Are you living life true to your dreams and goals or are you living someone else’s dream? With societal and peer pressure, it’s no surprise that we have been ‘conditioned’ to ‘want’ certain things. But is that truly what you want? Does it make you happy? A litmus test would be to see if you wake up in the morning feeling excited and ready to take on the day. Relook at your values and priorities if you constantly have to drag yourself out of bed.
Am I Achieving My Goals?
We all have big dreams and goals, but how many of them are actually fulfilled? It’s easy to get caught up in the everyday hustle and bustle. Before you know it, a year passes in a blink of an eye. Use self-reflection as a time to look back and see how far you have come. You may review and make adjustments to align with your long term goals.
What Are My Strengths And Weaknesses?
Feeling comfortable with your tasks at hand? Make no mistake, this could actually be a sign that you are hitting a plateau! I’m sure most of us enjoy feeling comfortable (who doesn’t?), but challenges are meant to help you build your character and grow. It can even be something as simple as taking on a new project to improve your communication skills. Or even volunteering at an animal shelter to overcome your fear of dogs!
Am I Taking Care Of Myself?
I’m sure we’ve pulled all-nighters and even skipped lunches to rush urgent tasks. It’s completely fine to do this once in a while. But no matter how hard you are working to pursue your goals, don’t forget to look after your physical and mental health. Health is wealth and nothing should be done at the expense of it. Make sure that you are sleeping and eating well, as well as taking enough breaks while chasing your dreams.
Am I Taking Anything For Granted?
As the saying goes, “You won’t know what you have until it’s gone”. We often don’t realise how lucky we are when everything is smooth sailing. So, remember to look back at the little things that made you happy and the people who stood by you. Show them appreciation and give them the gratitude that they deserve. Don’t wait until it’s too late!
Self-reflection does not come intuitively to us. After all, we’re hardwired to think quickly and keep up with the ever-changing economy. Make a conscious effort to slow down and start reflecting. Practice makes perfect!
